In the Nightmare Before Christmas, the Vampire Brothers create their version of a Christmas toy, which ends up being a little scarier than your average toy duck. (The duck was voiced by Greg Proops, though his name is not found in the credits).

I wanted to include this as part of the scene and decided to build it out of Styrofoam. To start out, I glued several layers of Styrofoam together and traced out the shapes of the duck body and head on the sides of each foam block.

Then, using a hot knife, I cut out the rough shape of the body.

After refining the shape with the hot knife, I finished the body by sanding it to smooth it out.

For the head, I used the same process, first cutting the shape out using the hot knife.

Once I had the mostly-carved shape, I sanded it and attached it to the body with some PVC pipe to serve as the neck.

The duck sits on a small wooden platform with wheels. For the platform, I used some wood from an old deck and for the wheels, I carved them out of foam.

Then it was on to the painting!

Once the painting was done, it was time for assembly. I added some screws up through the bottom of the wood platform to help hold the duck in place (to add reinforcement to the glue).

Once the duck was secured, I added the wheels to the platform and the duck was done and ready to delight/frighten children!
